I will try to have new and exciting challenges for
you, in this CORNER, about every two weeks. If you have something
you want more information on, please let me know by sending an e-mail or
an inquiry on the order page.
MAKING THE SWIM SUIT -
Choose a swim suit pattern by the bust size, you can add for the larger
hips. Choose carefully the type of fabric recommended by your
pattern.
With a 2-way stretch fabric, the GREATEST stretch always goes AROUND THE
BODY.
With the one-way stretch fabric, goes AROUND THE BODY.
ONE-WAY STRETCH fabric is not recommended for one piece suits, use only
for two- piece suits.
SUPPLIES - Lining, if used, can be of the same fabric as the suit, use
banlon, nylon tricot, or any other compatible fabric.
Bra cups or bra panel should be tried for size and proper fit. One
size larger or smaller will usually fit in the suit, pre-shrink and drip
dry. Do not put in dryer at any time. Where only minimal
support is needed, underline the bra area with polyester pellon, which
will replace bra cups or panels. Feather boning will also help.
Elastic is 3/8" or 3/4" wide, and must be labeled "FOR SWIMWEAR" to
resist chlorine in water.
Polyester thread is used.
Fine needles are used, ball point, #9 OR #11, is recommended.
Trims must not dull in chlorine water, buckles, buttons, rings, and
zippers. Fabric trims must have sufficient stretch.
CUTTING TO FIT - STRETCH FACTOR OF FABRIC -
The normal amount for a fabric is described as a minimum of 3". To
determine this, measure 15" crosswise, mark with a pin, and check
to see if it will pull to 18". If not, use a larger pattern,
or cut the suit larger. The pattern will have to be cut-to-fit the
larger bust or hip.
LENGTH - The suit should be 1" longer than your measurement
from top of bra to bottom of panties, for the strapless suit, or from
the shoulder to the bottom of the panties, for the suit with straps.
If you are long waisted, alter above the waist. If long below the
waist, alter below the waist, or divide both places, if needed.
Depth of neckline can be raised or lowered to be most flattering
for the individual, or a curved neckline can be changed to a "V".
THINGS TO CONSIDER - For larger or smaller bust, area must be
increased or decreased. Darts may need to be lowered for best fit.
If more length is needed, add length to the top or bottom. Or a
band can be added to each. The lower shaping of a bikini can be
stylized for the individuals thighs, if desired.
TO LINE - White, lacy, or lightweight fabric is usually lined.
Sometimes, just the front and crotch are lined. If you are
in doubt if lining is needed, wet a piece and see the results.
Some fabrics cling more and become more transparent than others when
wet.
Sometimes the lining is treated as underlining. The front panel
may be made from powernet like the front of a girdle. To do so,
place the lining on the swimsuit fabric wrong sides together.
Stitch all edges together. This does not apply to the top.
FABRIC PREPARATION AND CUTTING OUT -
SHRINK any fabric that has not been shrunk. Place in cool water,
on low setting, in washer, slow, short cycle. Dry naturally,
FABRIC AND BRA CUPS are not put in dryer.
Place fabric on cutting table, right sides together. Fold over
extra fabric, do not allow it to drape over the edge of table. It
will stretch out of shape.
CHECK YOUR LAYOUT IN PATTERN.
CONSIDER STRETCH OF FABRIC -
The greater stretch goes around the body. Cut the crotch and
straps with the stretch going vertically.
Bold designs should be placed in the area where they are most pleasing,
avoid bust and hip areas. Stripes must be matched.
Use fine pins, and cut with sharp scissors. Any marking should be
done with transparent tape and a pencil.
CONSTRUCTION -
SEAMS - CHECK SEAM ALLOWANCE GIVEN IN PATTERN. Most seams are
3/8". A roller foot will be especially helpful for this fabric.
Use 9 - 12 stitches per inch, with a fine, (#9) sharp needle. You
may find the ball point needle will work best here. Use a stretch
stitch if you have one. If not, a slightly narrower than medium
zig zag stitch can be used, if you stretch the seam as it is stitched
from the front only. Hold the back to stabilize it.
With a straight stitch, stretch fabric the amount it will give, and
stitch again 1/4" away. You may also want to topstitch seams to
one side. Excess fabric in seam allowance on curved seams in bust
area should be trimmed away, if needed, to keep them smooth and flat.
LINING is attached to swimsuit, wrong sides together, before proceeding
with elastics. The lining and suit fabric can be sewn together at
the same time.
NEXT - FITTING - If you would like more information on the
swimwear, send LSASE to me and I will send it on to you. NO
OBLIGATION.
